Applying for Certification: Everything You Need to Know
Rebecca's Café, Burlington, MA
8:00 a.m.

Have you been in consulting for at least three years? Are you interested in making a commitment to consulting as a career? Do you want to stand out in a crowded marketplace?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you should join us for this information session and discussion about the Certified Management Consultant (CMC) program, an international certification administered in the U.S. by IMC USA, our parent organization.

Come hear about how the CMC is being used to establish the new requirements for consultants in the next round of standards by the International Standards Organization (ISO) about IMC’s new emphasis on CMC’s and about how you can use the CMC to distinguish yourself as a committed career management consultant.

Mary Adams and Brooks Fenno will outline the current requirements for certification, answer any questions you may have and get you on your way to becoming a CMC in 2007.

Brooks, IMCNE’s VP of CMC Development, http://www.brooksfenno.com, has been a CMC for two decades. Brooks got his CMC because he believes in being the best at what he does.

Mary, IMCNE’s President, http://trekconsulting.com/, received her CMC last year. She believes that the ethics represented by the CMC designation are a key factor to its long- term success. She is also committed to building the CMC brand locally and nationally—“we have the power to give the CMC meaning.”

Walk-ins are welcome. You may purchase breakfast at the Café.

News from the Board

Roundtables: Our new Roundtable format has been a big success. These small group conversations are proving to be a powerful way to learn from your peers in our consulting community. Attend one soon and please also consider submitting a proposal to lead a Roundtable after the first of the year. Kudos to organizer Linda Watson. For questions or to submit a proposal, contact Linda at . You’ll find the form at http://imcne.org/forms/Roundtable%20RFP%202006-08.doc.

Submissions to our newsletter: A fellow IMCNE member shared with me recently that the highest citations for her firm’s website were from IMCNE. Non-profit organizations count more heavily for search engines. Get your name in our newsletter by contributing tips (see how below), sharing news or serving as a volunteer. I promise you’ll get much more than just website rankings. And we are happy to give you the exposure. Mary Adams (www.trekconsulting.com)

Tools You Can Use: Be featured in one of our weekly newsletters by submitting a Tip to IMCNE at . For your Tip to be considered for inclusion, the Tip should appeal to a wide audience of consultants and should be no longer than 50 words (1 -2 short paragraphs). Make sure to give us a 2-4 word title that we can use in the index. Please include your name, company name, email, phone, website, and one sentence describing your business and/or your tagline. Denise Clancey, Membership Chair, www.teledirectpartners.com.

Charlie GoodrichWhat do Beethoven and Dave Matthews Band Have in Common? Charlie Goodrich

Charlie Goodrich founded Goodrich & Associates in 1999. Charlie began solving business financial management problems more that 25 years ago. As the founder and principal of Goodrich & Associates, Charlie develops and implements customized business controls for client companies to help improve financial processes, reduce operating costs, enhance resource allocation decision-making and enable corporate restructuring plans.

He is the father of three boys: a senior in college who is fluent in Mandarin, a sophomore in college and a senior in high school. When asked to describe his biggest success, Charlie says it was distributing more money, faster than expected to the unsecured creditors of Loews Cineplex. His biggest surprise: "finding I like having my own business."

Ten Things We Didn't Know about Charlie Goodrich:
Would you settle for Two?

1. The last concert I went to... Beethoven's first and second symphonies and Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A Major, K. 622 by the Handel and Hayden Society and before that the Dave Matthews Band at Fenway.

2. My favorite toy as a kid... my dog.

Business Book Review

Citizen Marketers: When People are the Message, by Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba, Kaplan Publishing, Chicago, 2007.

If you want to better understand the age of marketing as done by anyone with access to a computer and the internet, this is the place to start. McConnell and Huba make a strong case that the medium is no longer the message but instead people are. Sites such as YouTube and MySpace have had more than a little impact on the business world.

Ask Wal-Mart how happy they are defending their practices against the barbs and questions posed by average citizens unhappy with the Company. Or companies such as Starbucks and Harley-Davidson that benefit every day from the positive comments of engaged consumers taking their passion to the internet. (Of course, they have their critics online, as well.)

In addition to mega-sites where anyone can say whatever they wish using a variety of media, there are more than 50 million blogs in cyberspace chatting away. If you are a business person and are not up with what is going on in the Web 2.0 world, it could cost you. Citizen Marketers uses case studies and specific examples written in everyday language to explain this phenomenon.
