Consultants Roundtable
Managing Virtual Teams
Rebecca's Café, Waltham, MA
8:00 a.m.

In view of augmented outsourcing efforts across a broad range of industries, virtual teams, assembled from different organizations and at remote locations, are becoming a more common setting to drive projects. This poses particular challenges and may significantly impact the success rate.

The objective of this Roundtable is to increase the awareness of risks and opportunities as a first crucial step towards leveraging the full potential of virtual teams.

Bernd Janssen, PhD, of Science&Management Consulting will lead a 30 minute introduction which will be followed by a discussion amongst participants who want to share their field experience.

Target Audience: Consultants who facilitate team building tasks, coach managers and project leaders

Dr. Bernd Janssen has more than 25 years of experience in Drug Discovery, Management of Research and Development functions and international collaborations.

Prior to founding Science&Management Consulting, a Massachusetts based firm that serves companies in Europe and the US, Bernd held various leadership and management positions in the Pharmaceutical Industry, most recently as Director Medicinal Chemistry with Abbott Laboratories, and previously with BASF Pharma. There he has launched several drug candidates into clinical development stages.

As a graduate from the University of Bonn, Bernd earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry from the Ruhr University of Bochum (Germany). He has coauthored over 50 basic patent applications and scientific papers, revealing his inventive contributions to Dermatology, Oncology and Immunology. He was also awarded the first BASF Innovation Prize for his seminal role in moving a discovery concept into a highly successful marketed product.

Bernd is member of several academic and industrial advisory boards.

Walk-ins are welcome and you may purchase breakfast at the Café.

IMCNE New Member Profiles

Maureen Kraten, MBA Enterprise Management Corporation, http://www.enterpriseman.net

I have spent the past 12 years as co-founder and director at Enterprise Management Corporation (EMC), a strategic management consulting firm based in Connecticut. EMC maintains centers of excellence in negotiation, entrepreneurship, and social policy.

I possess specific expertise in women and minority owned entrepreneurial organizations, ranging from start ups to large organizations that support entrepreneurial ventures. Prior to founding EMC, I worked in the senior executive offices of the Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) and Deloitte & Touche LLP (then known as Touche Ross & Co).

I earned an MBA in International Finance and a BS in Economics and Finance at Sacred Heart University, an AACSB accredited institution in Fairfield, Connecticut. I have also conducted post-graduate research work in the area of the European Union single currency initiative.

Eric EsperneEric Esperne, James River Consulting LLC, http:///www.jamesriverllc.com

I moved from Washington, DC, to Massachusetts last September with my wife Jeanine and son James. I moved to Massachusetts because Washington is too political and the traffic is bad, whereas here… In any event, Jeanine is now enjoying living close to her family and James is enjoying school at Dexter in Brookline. We have already taken advantage of New England’s skiing, which at its worst is still better than Pennsylvania, and James is learning to ice skate. I have never cared much for baseball but have learned to get teary eyed when talking about the Red Sox and vomit when anyone mentions the You Know Whos. We spend most weekends with Jeanine’s father on Cape Cod, where James and I launch model rockets on Corporation Beach and tinker with model trains in the basement. I enjoy rollerblading on the Rail Trail.

Jan RybeckJan Rybeck, Jan Rybeck, Leadership Momentum

Leadership intrigues me. I am never bored learning about the passion and focus demonstrated by leaders and the processes that both support and obstruct the potential to mobilize around an inspired vision. What I most respect about leadership is how the leader is only a part of what makes it work. A leader needs the “ship”, or rather, the capacity, both internal and external to themselves to lead effectively. This is what I love about this work, the interplay of the individual and the system. I have been building my work for almost ten years slowly and steadily while balancing my role as a mom-chauffeur of three active kids and a super busy consultant husband. I am now poised to build the work beyond my core base of clients, taking on more Leadership Coaching engagements and collaborating with others on larger change management processes. I am thrilled to be re-engaging with the IMC community.

David KimballAn IMCNE Inside Guy

Unlike most IMCNE members, David Kimball works as internal consultant. He is a financial consultant with Raytheon in the business process redesign of their financial applications. David received his CMC a few years ago when it looked like he would be leaving Raytheon rather than transferring to a new company that had bought the division he worked in. Instead, he transferred to Raytheon in Massachusetts to help install SAP software around the country.

David is a single guy who enjoys singing, playing the piano, reading non-fiction, and working with non-profits and NGOs (Non-Government Organizations) affiliated with the United Nations. He says his greatest success and surprise are wrapped up in one: passing the CPA exam on the first try while being in a technical position with little experience in accounting.
