Memo from the President

Summer 2006

Letter from the President

Mary Adams, IMCNE President Fellow Consultants:

Below, you will find a summary presentation that I made at our recent Annual Meeting. I hope that you find it helpful and thought-provoking. In the coming weeks, I’ll also share follow-up ideas about where to go from here. Please join our conversation about the future of IMCNE.

Your feedback and ideas are always welcome,

Mary Adams
President

IMCNE - State of the Institute
May 25, 2006

Our Intellectual Capital:

1. Human Capital

Membership includes:

  • 78 National Members
  • 30 Local “Affiliate” Members

CMC: The International Council of Management Consulting Institutes (ICMCI) is made up of 43 national member associations. This international organization oversees the process for certification of management consultants leading to the designation Certified Management Consultant (CMC). IMC-USA is the only organization that is authorized to certify consultants in the U.S. Today, 31 of IMCNE members are CMC’s. In general, we have low participation by CMC’s.

Board: The organization has always benefited from the strong participation of the board members.

Staff: The chapter has three part time staffers:

  • Donna Powell, Administrator
  • Cindy Murphy, Web Master
  • Joan Sherman, Bookkeeper

Interns: We have two interns interested in working with us in the summer of 2006.

2. Structural Capital

Website : www.imcne.org < http://www.imcne.org/ >

Member Profiles: Included on the website are:

  • Public list of all members
  • ProFile, an in-depth profile of every member accessible only to other members

Mailing list with 1,045 names on it. These names represent members, past members, attendees at any past event and those who have signed up for the list (through the website or other communication). According to ZapData (D&B), there are 3,631 management consulting firms in metro Boston with less than 10 employees.

Weekly email that announces IMCNE events and initiatives that goes out to everyone on our list.

Monthly/bimonthly newsletter that goes out to everyone on our list. The newsletter includes:

  • Member Spotlights
  • CMC Corner
  • Welcome New Members
  • Member Success Stories
  • Member Feature Articles

The participation by the members in this newsletter is quite limited at this point.

Yahoo list: There are lists set up for IMCNE members and the past Board on Yahoo. These have been used sporadically in the past.

3. Relationship Capital

Corporate Sponsors: IMCNE has been successful in recruiting corporate sponsorship in the past which helps cover our costs. Deltek has been a sponsor for several years although they have not participated actively in our programming and we fear that this may not continue.

Strategic Partnerships: There are a number of organizations with whom we have strategic partnerships. These include:

  • ADAPT - Assoc for Development, Advancement & Productivity through Technology Training
  • ITTC - Info Tech Training Conference (1/year)
  • NSANE National Speakers Assoc of NE
  • ICFNE - International Coach Federation of NE
  • NEWBO - New England Women Business Owners
  • SPC - Society Professional Consultants
  • WPIVF - WPI Venture Forum
  • MVVF - Merrimack Valley Venture Forum
  • ODLG - Mass Bay OD Learning Group
  • ICCA - Independent Computer Consultants Assoc

The IMCNE Brand: IMCNE was founded in 1967 and has operated consistently for almost forty years (should we advertise this next year?) It is hard to say how strong our brand is today. An honest assessment would probably be that it is not that strong. Only a small number of our members are active in the organization and we draw a very small portion of the consultants in New England .

4. Our Programming

Evening Programs: These have generally followed the model of drinks, dinner and a “Thought Leader” speaker such as a book author or prominent consultant. From September, 2005 to March, 2006, IMCNE held an evening program once a month. Average attendance at these events included:

  • 13 Members
  • 13 Non-Members

Consultants Conference: These half- to full-day conferences feature multiple speakers. IMCNE has held these conferences no more than once per year (sometimes skipping years). The conference held in April, 2006 drew:

  • 30 Members
  • 69 Non-Members

Professional Emphasis Groups (PEG’s) [also called Blue Herons]: These are groups formed by members from time to time. In the past, there was a Healthcare PEG that was formed by new members from a healthcare consulting organization that merged into IMCNE. An Owner-Managed Business PEG was formed by Harvy Simkovitz and has been running for the past year or so. This group draws approximately 10-20 people in a breakfast format at Rebecca’s in Burlington.

Breakfast Brainstorms: These are roundtable discussions of a topic presented by a moderator. There were two of these programs that had run for many years. One in NH was dissolved after Pamela Brown stepped down after hosting monthly sessions for over four years. The second, hosted by Vin D’Amico for several years was suspended in May, 2006 due to low attendance.
