Why
Smart Executives Fail
And What You Can Learn From Their Mistakes
5:30 - 8:00 PM
(Networking and Registration 5:00 - 5:30 PM)
with
Sydney Finkelstein, Tuck School of Management
Why
do good companies keep getting into big trouble? Usually it seems
that their top management made some incredibly stupid mistakes.
But the people responsible are almost always highly intelligent
and usually have terrific track records. So what's really going
on?
Professor
Sydney Finkelstein has carried out the largest research program
ever devoted to business breakdowns. In Why Smart Executives
Fail, he uncovers the specific, identifiable ways in which
companies like Motorola, Rubbermaid, Mattel, Webvan and Enron regularly
make themselves vulnerable to failure. The result is a truly indispensable,
practical book that explains the mechanics of executive breakdowns,
and how to spot them before they escalate.
Sydney
Finkelstein is the Steven Roth Professor of Management at the Tuck
School at Dartmouth College, where he teaches courses on Leadership,
Top Management Teams, and Managing Mergers and Acquisitions. He
joined the Tuck School in January 1994, after having been on the
faculty at the Graduate School of Business Administration at the
University of Southern California. He has taught executive education
at the Tuck School (where he serves as the Faculty Director of the
flagship Tuck Executive Program), Northwestern, Duke, Bocconi, London
Business School, Australian Graduate School of Management, and the
Helsinki School of Economics. He holds a Masters degree in economics
and industrial relations from the London School of Economics and
a Ph.D. from Columbia University in strategic management.
