IMC USA National Update

Report from National

Ken Lizotte CMC, current member of IMC USA Board of Directors, representing IMCNE
Chapter Representatives Meeting, Reno NV, October 2006

The most recent chapter representatives meeting in Reno, just before Confab in October, gave me a chance to share our NE prez Mary Adams’s concepts of “roundtables” as a programming model as well was her proposal to post articles and other knowledge materials on our IMCNE website, creating what Alan Weiss calls a “marketing magnet.” It was helpful especially to be able to offer the first idea because chapter reps were deliberating that day about how chapters could best use new National funding for new chapter projects. In particular, a grant to Atlanta president David Shavzin for a “pilot” membership development program in Atlanta was being considered, and Mary’s roundtable concept allowed me to make the point that funding such a project, though an appropriate thing to do, nonetheless should be undertaken only with the best assurances that use of such money will actually achieve Atlanta ’s goals. Otherwise, it was my contention that my fellow National Board members would reason to feel, down the road, that “Oh, we can’t do that because we tried that with Atlanta and it didn’t work.”

I was skeptical that David’s plan to use some of the money for snail-mailing, for example, would really have much effect. Or that if the same old program development concepts were in place (such as spending large sums on a hotel and/or using a program committee to struggle to “think up” great program ideas), this would just eat up his hard-won funding. So to be able to use IMCNE’s roundtable concept as an example of what I meant (here’s a programming concept that doesn’t cost any money for space and that derives program ideas from members, directly), we made the point that creativity is often more important than money!

Also, a new grant program from National has been made available that will fund a few select chapters who apply for financial assistance with their own membership development projects. Criteria for winning these funds includes:

  • Must have a current membership initiative at the chapter level
  • Must have a current membership chair/committee that can follow up on leads
  • Must have a posture for growth, participate in CPC monthly conference calls
  • Must provide lessons learned documents to educate other chapters.

IMCNE has now officially applied for these funds.

In terms of my own service on the IMC USA Board of Directors, I have been anointed one of a committee of two (with Pat Schumaker CMC from the Michigan chapter, also on the National Board) to act as our new Corporate Relations Review Committee, or CRRC.  This means developing sponsorships for chapters is now officially encouraged and supported by IMC National, and the role Pat and I play, primarily, is to request that all chapters submit their prospective sponsors to us for review so that we can determine if they are aligned with IMC goals and principles. The purpose of this, I emphasize, is to PROTECT chapters from conflict, criticism or legal ramifications that could potentially arise from accepting money from a sponsor whose product/service does not serve our members’ interests. The CRRC however is NOT intended to bureaucratize sponsorship programs nor to slow them down. Quite the opposite! Since my experience with sponsorships is deep and positive, after instituting such a program as President of IMCNE seven years ago, my objective is for CRRC to elevate the sponsorship model as a viable “non-member revenue source. ” As such, I see my role as a coach and mentor to other chapters, as needed. I have been there, I know what needs to be done and how it all has to happen FAST, so I see this new CRRC as an advocacy body, not an obstacle to success.
